In this first class, students painted leaves using a limited palette of ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.  The first painting emphasized line, the second painting emphasized form.

PAINTING A TURNER August 20, 2015

After doing an exercise to experiment with water and to practice layering colors, students used reproductions of  W.M.F. Turner's oil paintings to make their own versions of "Turner's".

URBAN LANDSCAPES August 13, 2015

In this class, students used photos to paint views of downtown San Jose from a high point of view.  In preparing for this project, we looked at the works of Dong Kingman, Jacob Lawrence and Wayne Thiebaud.

WHITE PINES LAKE IN COLOR July 30, 2015





In this third class of this session, students returned to the subject of White Pines Lake.  The first class project was to paint a landscape in black and white.  Now, returning to the same scene, students used color, emphasizing texture and contrast.

SEVERAL APPROACHES TO SUNFLOWERS Watercolor class July 23, 2015

Students painted one sunflower in different ways:  outlining with drawing pen, wetting the paper, drawing with paint and filling in with color.
