INSPIRED BY INDIAN PAINTINGS, December 8, 2016

The Indian theme of this class was inspired by the Rama Epic exhibition at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco., Students heard a lecture about how art was created during the Mughal and Rajput kingdoms in ancient times. They then selected a postcard image of an Indian Court painting to reproduce or to interpret.

A WINTER VIEW, December 1, 2016

Students viewed a demonstration of how to tone colors to create a wintry palette (by mixing in a small amount of the opposite colors).  They then painted a view from the window of the studio.

The following examples are not complete because the teacher did not have a chance to take a photo of each person's work.

PAINTING CLOUDS, November 3, 2016

For this first session, we experimented with different ways to combine watercolor with water by wetting the paper. The subject was clouds. To keep it simple and because it was a beginning class, we used mostly black paint.

The examples below are by students who already had experience in painting watercolors.

SEPARATING LINES AND COLOR, November 10, 2016

For this class, students created two watercolors using images from Cezanne.  In the first work, they recreated a Cezanne oil painting using only lines.  In the second work, they recreated the same painting, using only color.  The best examples are shown below.

VACATION SKETCHES, October 20, 2016

During this session, we featured painting landscapes.  For the last class of this session, students brought in photos of landscapes from their vacation.  With all their previous experience, students felt comfortable to make their own interpretations, working from their own photos.

COLOR AND LES FAUVES, October 13, 2016

Today we studied the landscape oil paintings of les Fauves, the early-twentieth-century French artists who used color freely and intuitively, making a first step towards abstract art.  Then students selected reproductions of landscapes, and made their own paintings, inspired by les Fauves' imagination.
