COLOR AND LES FAUVES, October 13, 2016

Today we studied the landscape oil paintings of les Fauves, the early-twentieth-century French artists who used color freely and intuitively, making a first step towards abstract art.  Then students selected reproductions of landscapes, and made their own paintings, inspired by les Fauves' imagination.

LANDSCAPES AFTER OBATA, September 29, 2016

The class looked at the works of Chiura Obata on the theme of Yosemite, thinking about his color schemes, his use of outlines and the variation in his brushwork.  Students went on to paint landscapes of mountains and plains from photographs.
