WHITE PINES LAKE IN COLOR July 30, 2015

In this third class of this session, students returned to the subject of White Pines Lake.  The first class project was to paint a landscape in black and white.  Now, returning to the same scene, students used color, emphasizing texture and contrast.

SEVERAL APPROACHES TO SUNFLOWERS Watercolor class July 23, 2015

Students painted one sunflower in different ways:  outlining with drawing pen, wetting the paper, drawing with paint and filling in with color.

BLACK AND WHITE SCENES OF NATURE July 16 2015



In this class, students worked from black and white photos to paint scenes of a lake, trees, and bushes.  By using only black paint, students focused on sharp contrast and texture.  The results show some interesting representations of light.

SELF PORTRAITS, Watercolor Class, June 11, 2015

For this class, students used a mirror to paint a self portrait.  Students were thinking about the colors of flesh and the way shadows fall on faces.

WATERCOLORS OF LANDSCAPE FROM A HIGH POINT OF VIEW, May-June 2015

An unusual point of view can make a watercolor interesting.  For this class, students painted the view from a window on a high floor of the library looking on to the campus of San Jose State.  They were inspired by Wayne Thiebaud's city views.

WATERCOLORS OF CLOUDS USING NEUTRAL COLORS

Students practiced painting neutrals by mixing colors that are opposite on the color palette.  They then did paintings of skies which had gray clouds.
