FIRST CLASS, March 12, 2015

For this first class, students did quick sketches to portray the "personality" of trees. 
Students were reminded that in an Asian painting, the artist must feel  a connection between what he or she is seeing in nature and what he or she is feeling inside.  Mary added words to make the connection perfectly clear.

FOURTH CLASS, February 5. 2015

For this class, the subject was fruit trees in flower in the spring.  Students concentrated on bringing out the softness of the blossoms, and making them stand out against the background.

For this class, students created compositions with materials from nature.

SECOND CLASS, January 22, 2015

This was a class to experiment with color and form abstractly.  Students did a series of exercises.  First they painted dabs of color which they let run together.  When this dried, they put a geometric shape on top of the first layer to create a sense of space.

For the last exercise, each student took an example of a painting by the outsider artist J.B. Murray and did an interpretation of his work.

For this first class, students painted a view from a window.  The challenge was to create the effect of fog by blurring the background images.
